Suriname: A Mosaic of History, Culture and Nature

Suriname lies in South America, is part of the Amazon, and is often described as one of the world’s best-kept secrets, a treasure nestled in South America. This treasure, bordered by French Guiana, Guyana, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean, is a vibrant testament to the richness of the Amazon.

Gaining independence from the Netherlands in 1975, Suriname emerged as the only Dutch-speaking nation in South America. Despite Dutch being the official language, Sranantongo serves as the Lingua Franca, alongside over 20 other languages. And yes the name Soela means – river rapid- in Sranantongo. There you have your first word in Sranantongo, our common language. It’s quite easy to learn!

The Suriname Dollar (SRD) is the nation’s official currency. Nonetheless, the US Dollar and Euro are widely accepted, facilitating both trade and tourism. Credit Cards such as Visa and Mastercard are accepted across the country, ensuring visitors can easily navigate their stay.

Suriname’s capital, Paramaribo, is the gateway to ecological wonders in the hinterland. Approximately 93% of the country is covered in tropical rainforests, rivers and home to the UNESCO-listed Central Suriname Nature Reserve. This reserve, alongside the historic inner city of Paramaribo, offers a glimpse into the country’s colonial past.

Eco-tourism flourishes in Suriname.

Eco-tourism flourishes in Suriname, with birdwatching, trekking, and river expeditions that honor and conserve the natural environment and indigenous communities. Characterized by tropical weather, Suriname experiences a cycle of rainy and dry seasons, maintaining a humid average temperature of 28°C (82.4°F)

Suriname’s demographic mosaic includes Afro-Surinamese, Chinese, Javanese, Indians, and Indigenous inhabitants, complimented by migrants from Brazil, Haiti, Dominica, Cuba, Guyana, even Turky and now you, the expat! Wouldn’t you want to be part of this unity in diversity?
